Under the slogan “(She) was not killed by the boat but by the state”, thousands of Albanians on Thursday demanded the resignation of the head of the Police, the Minister of Tourism, the Minister of Interior and the Prime Minister – and called for better protection on beaches. Opposition politicians were present at the rally as well.
The seven-year-old child was killed in the sea on Tuesday after being hit by a speedboat driven by an off-duty police officer.
The death shocked the country, where many have been asking for more security on beaches.
Police on Tuesday fired the entire chain of command of the local Directorate for Border and Migration of Vlora, “for not implementing additional measures to prevent incidents with watercraft in coastal areas”.
Prime Minister Edi Rama has dismissed public concern, however, saying that “until yesterday, this has been the most secure [summer] season”.
An 18-year-old year died last month in the sea near the port city of Durres while saving his five-year-old brother and his friend from drowning. A couple was also hit by a speedboat last month in Jal beach.
