Husein Kavazovic, the grand mufti of the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina, led the funeral prayer at a burial ceremony for 16 Bosniaks at the Kamicani Memorial Centre in Kozarac near Prijedor on Wednesday.

Kavazovic told the mourners that people should never forget the crimes committed in the area during the war. “The message is that the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina, regardless of their religion and nation, should see what happened,” he said, N1 TV reported.

Mujo Begic, head of the Bosnian Missing Persons Institute, said that many of the Bosniaks’ remains had been awaiting identification and burial for years.

“Due to the impossibility of identification and the lack of blood analysis from the families, some of the victims have been awaiting burial since 1999, when they were exhumed,” Begic said.

One of the mourners was Beisa Supuk, who lost her son-in-law Sead Avdic. “He was taken away from home as a civilian. He was taken to the [Bosnian Serb-run] Trnopolje detention camp where the whole family was. His wife gave birth to a son after his death,” Supuk said, N1 reported.

During the 1992-95 war, 3,176 civilians, mostly non-Serbs, were killed in the Prijedor area. Around 620 missing persons have yet to be found.
