Bosnian state-level prosecutors on Tuesday filed their first indictment partly based on evidence gained through the cracking of the SKY ECC and Anom apps which were used by criminals for encrypted communication.

The eight indictees, allegedly led by Dalibor Railic, are accused of organised crime, drug trafficking and money laundering.

They are also accused of planning and carrying out the murder of Radenko Basic, head of the criminal police in the Bosnian city of Prijedor.

The indictment alleges that the accused, “after a prior mutual agreement using encrypted applications, smuggled the narcotic drugs cocaine and marijuana on several occasions, which they smuggled, transported, hid and then marketed on the illegal drug market in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as abroad”.

The indictment also claims that Railic used the money earned through drug trafficking to buy luxury properties and vehicles.

As well as organised crime, Railic is accused of organising the murder of Basic.

Basic was allegedly shot dead by Aleksandar Mijatovic “in a public place in the early hours of the morning, which, due to the cruelty of the execution, as well as the fact that it was the murder of a police officer, severely impaired the security situation in Prijedor and throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina”, the prosecutors said.

The prosecution said it will submit hundreds of pieces of evidence, including evidence from the Sky ECC and Anom applications.

It confirmed in mid-November that evidence obtained from the cracking of the encrypted messaging app will be valid in court, and announced more than 100 people arrested in the past year and a half will be charged as a result.

The proceedings are expected to be some of the most complex court hearings in the history of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
