For 25 years, the Movement of Mothers of the Srebrenica and Zepa Enclaves has been organising protests on every 11th of the month demanding truth and justice. At their first gathering after the 27th anniversary of the 1995 genocide of Bosniaks by Bosnian Serb forces on July 11, mothers of Srebrenica have once again sent a message that they will not give up on the search for their family members.

“27 years have passed, we haven’t found the truth, we haven’t found justice, we haven’t found the bones of our children, to help us, and they can help us. Some know about the graves, some should join us, and some should also raise their voice», said Munira Subašić, president of the Association Mothers of the Srebrenica and Žepa Enclaves, addressing a message to all of those who have information on mass graves and crimes.

Holding sheets with the names of their loved ones and banners with their pictures, every month for the last 25 years, no matter the weather, these women have sent clear messages.

“The second message is to the criminals, to let them know that after 27 years we are not tired, they cannot forbid us, nor intimidate us, and we are still waiting for the truth, we are looking for justice,” Subasic added.

One of those women who comes every month to seek justice is Naza Hasanovic. “I have more dead than living family members,” she told BIRN.

Hasanovic hopes that young family members will take their place when one day the mothers can no longer stand on the streets.

“We will be here as long as we are alive, our kids and grandkids should continue this tradition,” Hasanovic added.

Azema Beganovic, originally from Srebrenica, has lost her husband, father, brothers and many other male family members.

“We are still looking for our loved ones,” Beganovic told BIRN. The remains of her husband were buried in 2007.

So far the remains of 6,721 people have been buried at the Srebrenica’s Potocari Centre.

According to the Missing Persons Institute, the remains of around 1,200 more Srebrenica victims have yet to be found.
